The persona triptych

The social personality of someone can be projected on three distinct planes in the same way a colour image can be segregated into its red, green and blue composants. By social personality I'm talking about all the elements of one's personality that are accessible from outside through social exchange.

The physical image

The personality of everyone is enshrined within a vessel made out of flesh and bones commonly called body. This body influences the social feedback of the personality in the eyes of the Others.

The first thing that we know of someone is his 3D image. We know how tall he is, the color of his skin, the features of his face, the general assembly of his flesh and bones. This first impression is the only one during the first seconds of a social exchange and as such, it is the strongest. As the exchange continues, it will gradually lose importance.

The behaviour

This one is a little hard to describe. It has little to do with the body of one, and is not so much of a brain process. This plane include everything that doesn't show up on a 3D picture of one, and that doesn't show up on an epistolary exchange (that is purely informal and as such purely brainy). It is the way to move, the way to smile, the facial expressions , the general attitude of someone. It is, I think, the most important plane in a social exchange. It takes a few minutes or one hour of exclusive communication to assess, depending on the complexity of the pattern and on the extrovertedness of the subject.

The first plane is rather anecdotal (except in case of sexual interest), this one will decide if you like someone or not. Then, the 3rd plane will decide if you agree.

The content of the brain

And not "the way the brain works", which is more accurately described in the 2nd plane. This one is the compilation of all your experiences, your skills, your opinions, your convictions... This is the most important plane if you are to be married with someone. I have many friends that I appreciate for their behaviour but that I disagree with on all important issue. It is ok since I don't see them so often and we stick to unsensitive subject.

It takes a long time to estimate this one. You get hints very soon but you might not reach an accurate conclusion before many hours of exclusive communication. Plane 3, after a few years, will completely blot out the two others. But it takes a long time to appreciate.
