Gay Turkish referee demoted... so what?

In the past month, North Korea tested a nuclear bomb (or maybe it blew in their hands, the free world just recorded the seismic activity). Iran burst in riots so much that Tehran looks like Paris now. EU elections were held and few people in EU seemed to notice. Hundreds of people died in an Air France plane catastrophe... Well, that's a lot of stuff. You wouldn't expect some meaningless story to turn up in the newspaper.

Le Monde today: "A gay Turkish referee demoted", heading a long article on how Turkey is not modern enough to handle homosexuality, and second degree, how Turkey is so not ready to join the EU gentlemen's club. Well, let's see...

In Poland, you have many associations that provide psychological help to cure homosexuality. As, in Poland, homosexuality is considered a mental disorder. Check this out.

Poland is not Sweden, but neither is it Bulgaria. It is an industrial and culturally advanced country that naturally finds its place in the EU. And that discriminates the gay society. And that discriminates on women. And that discriminates on its minorities. Just as Turkey. Just as Spain. Just as France.

Interesting blog post.

I also don't want Turkey to join the EU, but for selfish reasons: I rue the day Turkish foods will be regulated by chemical-happy EU sanitizing "health and safety" laws that plasticize everything.

One good thing about being gay in Turkey is that you get to miss out on the mandatory military service requirement. One bad thing is that you essentially become blacklisted from working public service jobs afterwards.

Yes, all over this world, we've all still got a long way to go ahead of us.
